Leicestershire Young Archaeologists’ Club
The Young Archaeologists’ Club nationally began in 1972 by two young people with a keen interest in archaeology. Leicestershire has a thriving club which was set up in 1995 with many young people already registered. It meets monthly, mostly in Leicester with occasional meetings around the county and summer field trips and activities. It caters for young people between the ages of 8 and 17 years who want to explore their interest in Archaeology and History. LYAC is one of 70 YAC groups that can be found across the UK. A wide range of activities is offered such as fieldwalking and excavations. LYAC is a charitable group that is run by volunteers.
In recent years, the Leicestershire group has been involved with:
- fieldwalking at Bosworth Battlefield and other county sites
- excavating at Leicester Abbey, Abbey Park and lately at Burrough Hill Iron Age Fort excavations
- visits to places of interest in Leicester and Leicestershire
There is no local membership fee, but there is a small membership charge to join the national Young Archaeologists’ Club.
This membership gives you a certificate, badge and membership card, a regular magazine packed with the latest news, a chance to enter the Young Archaeologist of the Year Award competition and the YAC Pass. The YAC Pass is a passport to the past which is packed full of special offers designed especially for YAC UK members such as free or discounted entry at over 160 museums and heritage sites across the UK and exclusive deals with some organisations. YAC Pass holders can gain free entrance to Snibston and Bosworth Battlefield (only when entering with one full paying adult).
