This year’s Festival of Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology ran from Saturday 15th July to Sunday 30th July. We hope you were able to take part in the UK’s largest archaeology festival and help bring our past to life. 80 events were held across Leicestershire and Rutland celebrating the rich and diverse heritage of the two counties.
The two-week long Festival, part of the Council of British Archaeology’s nationwide Festival of Archaeology 2017, once again proudly offered the biggest programme of events anywhere in the UK. We are currently adding up the numbers but it looks like we have again had more people attending than the previous year. See also our Festival page Fieldworkers Festival Page .
Building on recent public interest in Leicester’s archaeology, where the recent discovery of the largest and finest-quality mosaic found in over 150 years in Leicester attracted more than 5,000 visitors, this year’s programme was packed with a fascinating array of have-a-go events, talks and guided tours from some of the county’s leading archaeological and historical experts. Local groups also show off their own discoveries and invite people to become involved in making the next great discovery!
